Smith & Nephew Modular Hip Recall

The devices included in the Smith & Nephew Modular Hip recall were sold between October 2008 and July 2016. According to an URGENT FIELD SAFETY NOTICE issued by Smith & Nephew on November 15, 2016, affected devices included a modular neck hip prosthesis used with the Modular SMF and REDAPT Revision Femoral Hip Systems, as well as a number of SMF and REDAPT Revision hip stems. The Modular SMF hip had been associated with a complaint rate of .527%, while a 0.25% rate of complaints had been observed with the Modular REDAPT hip. Smith & Nephew also noted that the complaint rate appeared to be trending upward.

Recipients of these Smith & Nephew hip implants should should be monitored for pain, swelling, limited mobility and enlarged bursa. Those who experience these problems should undergo extensive clinical evaluation, including blood testing to determine levels of chromium/cobalt ions, as well as imaging screens to assess soft tissue reactions.
