Shoulder Replacement Failure

The majority of shoulder replacements last at least 10 years. However, some implants fail prematurely. This can be due to a number of factors, including defects in the prosthesis. Common reasons for shoulder replacement failures include:

  • Infections
  • Damage to the rotator cuff
  • Loosening or misalignment of the prosthesis
  • Dislocation or partial dislocation of joint
  • Erosion of components
  • Nerve injuries
  • Allergic reaction to prosthesis materials or cement
  • Bone loss
  • Instability and weakness

In many cases, victims of failed shoulder implants may be forced to undergo revision surgery in an attempt to remove and replace the defective implants. However, this is a risky procedure, and many patients will never regain full function of the joint. For other patients, the risks associated with shoulder replacement revision are too great to even allow consideration of that option.

Biomet Shoulder Replacement Recall

Many shoulder replacement lawsuit commercial ads airing today describe problems similar to those that prompted Biomet, Inc. to recall its Comprehensive Reverse Shoulder Humeral Tray with Locking Ring (49 mm standard, sterile, REF 115350). According to the September 2010 recall notice, Biomet had received complaints regarding fracturing of the device at the joint between the trunnion and the baseplate. This recall was designated Class II by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, which indicates that the product had the potential cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health problems.

In February 2016, Biomet agreed to settle a shoulder replacement lawsuit involving the Comprehensive Reverse Shoulder System for $350,000. The plaintiff, who had received two Comprehensive Reverse Shoulders in 2009 and 2010, was forced to undergo revision surgery after he experienced failure of the devices at t the joint between the trunnion and the baseplate. Court records indicated that the case settled just days before it was scheduled to go to trial.
