PrevAcid Lawsuit Allegations

PrevAcid is a proton pump inhibitor marketed by Takeda Pharmaceuticals. Like other drugs in this class, it is approved to treat peptic disorders related to excess stomach acid. Since 2003, proton pump inhibitors have ranked among the top-selling prescription medications in the U.S. In fact, these drugs were used by more than 21 million Americans in 2009.

Because they are so commonplace, few worry about the potential for proton pump inhibitor side effects. Unfortunately, they are not without risk, as recent studies have linked long-term use of these medications to a wide range of issues, including bone fractures, low magnesium, B12 deficiency, dementia, and heart attacks. A growing body of research also suggests that proton pump inhibitors may harm the kidneys, leading to chronic kidney disease, renal failure and more.

Plaintiffs who have filed PrevAcid lawsuits and other proton pump inhibitor cases involving kidney complications claim that the drugs’ manufacturers have been aware of their association with kidney problmes for years. Yet they have failed to provide doctors and patients with adequate warnings regarding this risk. Plaintiffs contend that thousands of such claims will be filed in the near future, and are seeking to have all federal lawsuits of this nature transferred to a single U.S. District Court for the purposes of coordinated pretrial proceedings. The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation will hear Oral Arguments on the matter during a hearing to be convened on January 26, 2017.

How Can a PrevAcid Lawsuit Help?

PrevAcid settlements resulting from the proton pump inhibitor litigation could provide plaintiffs with financial compensation to cover the physical, financial and emotional damages associated with their alleged injuries, including:

  • Medical bills
  • Lost wages
  • Emotional distress
  • Loss of consortium for a spouse
  • Loss of enjoyment of life
  • Pain and suffering
  • Permanent disability
  • Wrongful death of a loved one due to renal complications.

It may be two years or more before any PrevAcid settlements are announced. However, you must seek legal help as soon as possible if you wish to preserve your rights to recover damages for kidney complications.
