Bone Disorders Potentially Linked to Neocate Formula

Neocate Formula is a line of amino acid, or elemental, formulas recommended for infants and children suffering from:

  • Cow milk allergy
  • Soy allergy
  • Multiple food protein intolerance (MFPI)
  • Food-allergy-associated conditions, such as GERD or Eosinophilic esophagitis
  • Short bowel syndrome
  • Malabsorption
  • Other GI disorders

Formulas sold under the Neocate brand include:

  • Neocate Syneo Infant (0-12 months)
  • Neocate Infant DHA/ARA (0-12 months)
  • Neocate Nutra (6+ months)
  • Neocate Junior (1+ Years)
  • Neocate Junior Probiotic (1+ Years)
  • Neocate Splash (1+ Years)
  • EO28 Splash (1+ Years)

While marketing materials for Neocate indicate that these products “help provide all the essential nutrients your child needs to grow and develop,” a study published in the April 2017 issue of the medical journal Bone suggested that infants and children who were fed these products were more likely to develop rickets and other serious bone disorders.

51 children were involved in the study, all of whom had been diagnosed with unexplained hypophosphatemia. Skeletal radiographs demonstrated fractures, undermineralization, or rickets in 94% of the cases.

Many of the children involved in the study were on a diet that consisted entirely of Neocate formulas for variable periods of time prior to their presentation. But once they were prescribed supplemental phosphate or switched to a different formula product, the children improved.

The manufacturer of Neocate Formula is aware of this study, and even cites it on webpage intended for consumers in the U.K. That same page also cautions U.K. consumers that infants and children on Neocate “require regular monitoring and review and follow up is essential to ensure they receive adequate nutrition.”
