Neocate Formula and Hypophosphatemia

Amino acid or elemental formulas like Neocate are designed to be hypoallergenic and easy to digest for infants and children who suffer from:

  • Cow milk allergy
  • Soy allergy
  • Multiple food protein intolerance (MFPI)
  • Food-allergy-associated conditions, such as GERD or Eosinophilic esophagitis
  • Short bowel syndrome
  • Malabsorption
  • Other GI disorders

However, a study published in the medical journal Bone in April 2017 linked Neocate Formula to hypophosphatemia. The study involved 51 children who were diagnosed with the condition, many of whom had only been fed Neocate for variable periods of time prior to their diagnosis. Skeletal radiographs demonstrated fractures, undermineralization, or rickets in 94% of the cases.

Most tellingly, all of the children improved once they were given supplement phosphate or switched to a new formula.

Why Does the Body Need Phosphate?

Phosphate contains the mineral phosphorus, which the body needs to repair bones and teeth. Phosphorus also aids in nerve function and helps the muscles contract.

While some phosphorus is stored in tissues throughout the body, about 85% is stored in the bones.

Phosphorus can be found naturally in food. Good sources include:

  • Meats
  • Poultry
  • Fish
  • Nuts
  • Beans
  • Dairy products

What is Hypophosphatemia?

Hypophosphatemia is an electrolyte disturbance in which there is an abnormally low level of phosphate in the blood.

Signs of this condition include:

  • Irregular breathing
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Muscle weakness
  • Weight gain or loss

Chronic hypophosphatemia that accompanies chronic phosphate deficiency can result in significant bone disease.
